In the middle of the reserve, the Ewaso Ng’iro flows through doum palm groves and thick riverine forests. It provides water, without which the game in this arid region could not survive. The Samburu National Reserve was one of the two areas in which conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness, made famous in the best-selling book and award-winning movie Born Free. The Elephant Watch Camp lies within the park. It is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting oryx calves. Drive out to Trout Tree Restaurant in Nanyuki in time for lunch. In 2013, they reached a population milestone of 100 black rhinos. It also houses the two remaining northern white rhinos in the world, who were moved here from Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic. Sadly, the only Northern white rhino named Sudan was put to rest due to old age. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is situated here. It provides a haven for orphaned, abandoned and rescued chimpanzees. It is the only place in Kenya where these great apes can be seen. The Conservancy is host to the “Big Five” among a large selection of other African animals, which makes it a popular safari destination. Lake Nakuru is now a rhino sanctuary, harboring a population of over 40 black and over 60 white rhinos, but the flamingos, of course, have always been the main attraction. At times there may be almost 2 million flamingos in the residence, forming a stunningly beautiful deep pink band around the edge of the lakeshore. Many of the cheetahs are so tame they seek shelter from the hot sun under one’s vehicle and several even climb onto the roof to get a better view of prospective prey. For the bird enthusiast, almost 500 species have been recorded: among these 16 species of eagle, plus many hawks and falcons, 6 species of vultures, 8 species of storks 4 of bustard (including the kori bustard, the world’s heaviest flying bird), and 9 species of sunbirds.
